Navigating the Shadows of the Season: Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) and the Impact of Sunlight, Vitamin D, and Holidays

As autumn settles in and daylight hours dwindle, a familiar visitor comes knocking on the door of many lives - Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). Commonly referred to as the "winter blues," SAD is a form of depression that surfaces with the changing seasons, most notably in fall and winter.

The Role of Sunlight: One of the key factors contributing to SAD is the reduction in sunlight exposure. With shorter days and longer nights, individuals may find themselves grappling with a lack of natural sunlight. Sunlight plays a crucial role in regulating our circadian rhythms and influencing the production of serotonin, a neurotransmitter associated with mood stabilization. Reduced exposure can disrupt these natural processes, contributing to feelings of lethargy, sadness, and a general decline in mental well-being.

Vitamin D Deficiency: The decrease in sunlight exposure during the colder months also leads to a decline in the body's production of vitamin D. Often referred to as the "sunshine vitamin," vitamin D is essential for various bodily functions, including maintaining a healthy mood. A deficiency in this vital vitamin has been linked to an increased risk of depression, making it an important factor to consider when addressing the onset of SAD.

Holiday Stressors: As the holiday season approaches, the confluence of SAD with the festive period can intensify its impact. While the holidays are a time of celebration and joy for many, they can also bring about stressors, such as family dynamics, financial pressures, and the expectation of constant merriment. For those already grappling with SAD, these added stressors can exacerbate symptoms and make it challenging to fully embrace the holiday spirit.

Navigating the Shadows: Fortunately, there are strategies to mitigate the effects of SAD. Increased exposure to natural light, especially during the morning hours, can be beneficial. Additionally, incorporating vitamin D supplements and maintaining a balanced diet can help address deficiencies. For those navigating the holiday season, setting realistic expectations, prioritizing self-care, and seeking support from loved ones or mental health professionals can be instrumental in managing stressors.

As the seasonal shift continues, remember to take proactive steps to prioritize your mental well-being. Whether it's embracing the invigorating chill of a winter walk, increasing your vitamin D intake, or practicing mindfulness during the holidays.  Also remember, in addition to Ketamine assisted therapy and psychiatric care, The Journey Within offers vitamin D injections and vitamin IV’s to help support you through the darker times of the up-coming season.  We also have massage therapist Nicole on site to help ease the tension in between the holiday parties and shuffling! These small actions can collectively make a significant difference in navigating the shadows of the season and your over-all mental health and wellness.

Meet Nicole:

Nicole

Hello! My name is Nicole Cutchins. I am a LMT (Licensed Massage Therapist) and the owner of The Mindful Body Massage. I am so excited to be sharing a space with Hannah Banks and Angeleah Roberts at the Journey Within! I truly believe in the mind body connection, and couldn't imagine a better place to be located to help others heal. I graduated from my massage therapy apprenticeship at Orem Center for Massage in December of 2021, and have been working as a licensed massage therapist and building my business ever since. I started my business working out of my home just a month after officially becoming licensed and cant believe in less than two years, I was able to expand into my new office space and have the opportunity to be where I am. I have a passion for work that is tailored to my individual clients' needs. Meticulous communication is a key factor in receiving and giving a great massage, so I am always sure to be thorough in gathering the information I need to give the best massage I can. I am trained in several different techniques such as deep tissue massage, trigger point therapy, Swedish massage, cupping massage, hot stone massage, assisted stretching, and prenatal massage. I utilize my training to incorporate all the different techniques I have learned into my massages to create a unique experience that you can feel is just for you. In addition to using the skills I've acquired in my various technique trainings, I also incorporate guided breathing and use the power of the breath to help release and relax muscles.  I am passionate about being a forever student and am always looking to learn and grow in my practice in any way I can. I am committed to always creating a safe, comfortable environment that is primed for healing. I am trauma conscious, body positive, and LGBTQIA+ affirming, and I will always do everything in my power to provide a safe and comfortable environment of healing to my clients. I look forward to helping you heal!
